Same-Day Emergency Copper IUD Insertion & Contraceptive Care in Northbridge/ Perth CBD
Emergency contraception can potentially reduce the risk of unplanned pregnancies. In Australia, women have three options for emergency contraception: two types of oral pills — the levonorgestrel (LNG) pill and ulipristal acetate (UPA) — and the copper intrauterine device (IUD). Both oral pills are available over the counter at pharmacies without a prescription, while the copper IUD must be inserted by a trained healthcare provider.
At James St Medical Northbridge, we understand that contraception decisions can sometimes be urgent and time-sensitive. Our Emergency Contraception Clinic provides prompt, confidential, and evidence-based care — including same-day Copper IUD insertion when clinically appropriate.
Conveniently located in the heart of Northbridge/ Perth CBD, our service is easily accessible for those who live or work in the city and surrounding areas.
What We Offer:
- Same-Day Copper IUD Insertion (Emergency Contraception)
The Copper IUD is the most effective form of emergency contraception when inserted within 5 days of unprotected intercourse. At the individual level, clinical trial data show that intrauterine devices (IUDs) are highly effective, preventing more than 99% of pregnancies. It also provides ongoing contraception for up to 5–10 years depending on the device.
Where possible, we aim to:
- Provide urgent appointments
- Assess suitability on the same day
- Perform insertion during the same visit
- Oral Emergency Contraception
Oral emergency contraceptive pills are the most commonly used method of emergency contraception; however, they are less effective than Copper IUD and regular contraceptive methods, such as the oral contraceptive pill, when used for ongoing pregnancy prevention. Oral emergency contraception will prevent around two-thirds of pregnancies if commenced within 24 hours of unprotected sexual intercourse. The Two oral methods have similar side effects, but Ulipristal acetate (UPA) is more effective than Levonorgestrel (LNG) and can be used up to five days after intercourse.
- Levonorgestrel (within 72 hours of intercourse)
- Ulipristal acetate (within 5 days of intercourse)
